Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the consumer reporting agencies are required to promptly transmit a dispute to the creditor that is reporting the inaccurate information. If the information is not corrected within thirty days, then a debtor is free to sue the creditor (and the consumer reporting agency under certain circumstances) for reporting inaccurate information to the consumer reporting agency.
