To New Beginnings and Fresh Starts
April 22, 2020 is the 50th Anniversary of the founding of “Earth Day” by the late Wisconsin US Senator Gaylord Nelson. In the middle of this year’s beautiful spring season, take a moment to consider what Senator Nelson had to say about his idea.
In his initial speech on Earth Day 1970, Gaylord stated that his idea was to “get a nationwide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy.” He believed, and spoke out on his belief, that everyone needs to act. He felt that everyone on the planet is entitled to clean air, clean water, and both “economic and environmental well-being.”
“Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty…The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all human beings and all other living creatures.”
We are living in an epic time for change. History will remember us on a grand scale, and yet we are each individual men and women in our own little corners of this big world. In the US, we have pushed and pushed the envelope into what is now a massive imbalance, on so many different fronts. We are poised for re-balancing in so many ways.
Take some time today on Earth Day 2020, and each day, to show your gratitude by playing your part in the “environment of decency and mutual respect.” And remember Mr. Gaylord Nelson, born in 1916, the son of a nurse and a country doctor, who fought at Okinawa and later became an outspoken advocate. In his book “Beyond Earth Day: Fulfilling the Promise”, he famously stated: “The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment, not the other way around.” Focus on the fresh starts coming around the corner soon. The time is now.
